This is one of the most
enjoyable gorge walks in Crete with its narrow canyons and rich
vegetation.
Just 7 kms long - It may be
small but it is the most picturesque, with its winding ravines
and dry riverbeds it is quite spectacular. In some parts the
gorge is very narrow with really impressive walls. Ideal for
anyone who likes walking but does not want to go on a hike.
Imbros gorge starts at the
last house in the village and ends at the village of Komitades.
Apart from being so beautiful, Imbros gorge has many visitors
every year mainly because it is easy to walk through, it has no
dangerous points and you don't need a guide.
Its an easy down hill walk,
definitely stop at the refreshment kiosk half way down even if
its only to see how the drinks are kept cold. (There are also
toilets here)
Once you reach the bottom you
can relax in one of the many tavernas in the village at the
bottom.
You can leave your car in
Imbros and either return back through the gorge or get a taxi
from Komitades back to Imbros.
During World War II, twelve
thousand allied soldiers evacuated the island by walking through
the gorge to the south coast of Crete under airplane fire, they
were taken by the Royal Navy to Egypt. |
