Rethymnon

Rethymnon is in the county of Rethymnon approx 2 hours drive from Malia, about half way between Heraklion and Chania on the north coast of Crete.

Rethymnon is a lovely attractive little town with its own character, which has retained it ancient architecture, and stands on the site of a very ancient city called Rithymna. It has a beautiful harbour, which is surrounded by small quaint restaurants which serve fresh fish.

Overlooking the town is the Fortress of Fortezza built around 1573, an amazing area, which to date is being restored to its original beauty, standing atop of the fortress gives you fantastic views over the bay, harbour and the town.

At the entrance is the Archaeological Museum where you will can see all the finds from over the whole country of Rethymnon, arranged in chronological order and covering all the periods in history of the area.

A short walk behind the Fortress of Fortezza into the old town, you will find a maze of narrow Venetian alleyways with little old houses with wooden coved balconies. These alleyways offer a wealth of shopping where the little shops sell just about everything from Souvenirs, Jewellery, Leather, Cretan Spices and Potter.

You will also find tiny cafes and bars in between the small shops where you can sit and watch the world go by, some of the alleyways have been taken over by restaurants where you can get all types of food to eat from snacks to meze's and full a la carte dining.

The small harbour, is a lovely place to sit and have a coffee and watch the small boats come in and out of the harbour, you can also take a boat trip on a pirates ship.

At the end of the harbour wall is a small Venetian light house, which was built in 1874 when the Venetians dominated Crete,

It is a beautiful stone tower with a square base, and octagonal shaft, with a circular top, but unfortunately is no longer working and is now a historic monument guarding the entrance to the small harbour.
