It's a while since I was in Malia (approx 4 years) but the food in the Kalesma taverna was the best I've ever had in Greece! The staff were really friendly and they do a fabulous mezze. It was the first time I've ever trusted a waitress enough to let her decide what I would be eating that evening! But we told her what we really didn't like, then she brought us an assorment of beautiful little dishes, every one as delicious as the last.

The best thing was the potatoes. Made to their own secret recipe, they were great as a starter or occasionally served with a main course. Be sure to save some bread to mop up the sauce though because you won't want to waste a bit! I've been to Greece many times and I don't think I've ever in my life had potatoes that good!

The taverna itself is beautiful, with painted woodwork and stunning blown-glass light-fittings which give the place a touch of class. It's right up in the old town, and I was lucky enough to read a review in my hotel on my first night in Malia which recommended it. If it wasn't for that, I'd never have found it and it is a little gem. It's a great place to visit if you want a taste of Greece and want to get away from the madness of the bars and clubs for an evening.

However, all I would say is don't bother with this place if KFC or MacDonalds is more your thing, or if you eat everything with ketchup!
